Ava M. Brackett

Ava Francine Malloy Brackett was born on February 20, 1954, in Durham, North Carolina.

She was a graduate of Brown University and Yale University School of Law (1986).

Ms. Brackett’s accolades are numerous. She refused to let labels define her outcomes.

In 1991, Ms. Brackett was the first and only African-American woman appointed by Governor Romer to the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission. Also in 1991, she was presented with both the Nelson Mandela Humanitarian Award and the Colorado Minority Women Lawyer’s Outstanding Achievement Award. In 1992, she received the National Association of Black Women Attorneys Outstanding Achievement Award. In 1999, Yale University School of Law endowed the Ava Brackett Scholarship Fund to be awarded to dedicated students who embody Ms. Brackett’s humanitarian commitment and intellectual drive.

Ms. Brackett passed away in Denver on September 13, 1992, at 38 years old.
