Members, we received the following message from Randy Bramer, a member of the Doyle Inn of Court, inviting our own members to participate in this series of FREE CLE programs for students and young lawyers. Please see Mr. Bramer’s message below for more details:

Colleagues – I would like to invite you to a series of informal trainings focusing on practical skills in civil litigation for students, law clerks and young lawyers. We are applying for 2 CLE’s for each of the sessions. There is no charge for attendees. These sessions are sponsored by the Doyle Inn of Court.

The schedule for this year includes the following sessions:

October 15, 2014 – Practical Suggestions for Taking and Defending Depositions

November 19, 2014 – Negotiation and Settlement – The Things You Have to Know

January 29, 2015 – Direct Examination

February 25, 2015 – Cross Examination

April 15, 2015 – How to Succeed in Private Practice

May 20, 2015 – Appellate Practice

The first session on taking and defending depositions will be held on October 15, at 4:00 PM at the office of Holland & Hart in downtown Denver. The session will last approximately two hours. Materials will be distributed ahead of time so participants will have examples for future use.

I hope this will be an interactive process with participants feeling free to ask questions and contribute experiences. We also invite experienced practitioners to share experiences as well as sample pleadings and outlines.

The sessions will be held at the downtown Denver office of Holland & Hart at 555 17th Street, Suite 3200 (32nd floor). There’s a reception desk on the 32nd floor where people should let someone know they are attending the session, and they will be directed to the right area.

Please let me know if any of your Inn members, young lawyers or law clerks may be interested in attending. Also please have them RSVP to randy.bramer@ogc.usda.gov. I hope these talks will help further the Inns’ purpose of educating and mentoring young lawyers.

Members, for those of you who attended David Akerson’s program on the International Tribunals, see the message below from David to Judge Gerdes regarding an upcoming FREE CLE program on the topic, along with the graphic below describing the program:

Dear I addressed the Inn of Court a while back on the International Tribunals.  I wanted to let you know about an upcoming event that will be discussing similar issues.   On April 2nd at 4:30 at Anderson Academic Commons (main DU library), our speaker is going to be Fergal Gaynor, the victims’ representative at the Int’l Criminal Court in the case against sitting president of Kenya.  In an innovation at the international tribunals, he is appointed to represent the 20,000 victims and appears as a party independent of the prosecutor and defense attorney in the proceedings.  He will be talking about this new kind of trial counsel, and the differences in the representation and participation of victims at the Rwanda Tribunal versus this new model at the ICC.

Upcoming presentation by Fergal Gaynor
